SmartSketches is a user-centred approach to introducing computer-based tools in the initial stages of product design. To this end, we will develop innovative multimodal user interfaces combining sketches, gestures and speech among others, to accomplish design tasks in differ-ent contexts, ranging from small tablets to large-scale displays and immersive environments. This approach will be borne out of extensive user studies and task analysis to identify critical bottlenecks in present-day conditions. Our work will yield prototype tools and interaction methods whose ease of use will be assessed through end-user testing in terms of lesser time required to perform critical tasks, fewer errors in final results and higher-quality products.

The paper "Mixing Images and Sketches for Retrieving Vector
Drawings" was presented at the 7th Eurographics Workshop on Multimedia
(EGMM'04), Nanjing, China, October 2004.
Simultaneously, SBR and GIDES++ was demonstrated to several research groups.

We have organized the Eurographics Workshop on Sketch-Based
User Interfaces and Modeling. The workshop took place on August 30 and
August 31 in Grenoble, France. It was attended by 48 participants who discussed 21
papers. The technical program can be consulted here. The venue
was a great success. As a result, the Eurographics Association has created a
Working group on Sketch-Based User Interfaces
and Modeling. The next venue is planned to take place in Dublin Ireland,
just before Eurographics 2005.
